Review: The Legends of Surf Guitar Recorded Live at The Lighthouse April 1, 1995

The Legends of Surf Guitar Recorded Live at The Lighthouse

As was written, in 1994 Pulp Fiction was released to theaters, effectively attaching jumper cables to surf music. Not only did this give rise to countless new surf groups, but 60's acts found a new audience, which gave way to events like the one presented to us here: a recording of a 1995 gathering of surf greats at the Lighthouse Cafe in Hermosa Beach in 1995, organized in part by Paul Johnson (Bel-Airs and PJ and the Galaxies). Surfguitar101 Festival 2024

Nebulas at Surfguitar101 Festival

It's hard to beat surf music in Southern California. Surfguitar101 was ostensibly a meetup for online forum members with a nice lineup of 10 bands, Today it stands as the premiere surf event of the US and possibly the world, with a globe-spanning lineup of over twenty bands, and I believe Saturday night was the biggest I'd ever seen it. Organizer Jeff "BigTikiDude" Hanson, modest pool cleaner by day, has been slowly tweaking the event and his support team to grow the event organically into something uncompromisingly accessible and genuine.

The Surfaris release Hurley Sessions

The Surfaris - Hurley Sessions

From what I can tell this is the first release under the Surfaris name since 2005's Wipe Out (which seems to be a completely different version from the 60's version we all know). The lineup here includes original guitarist Bob Berryhill. Haven't been able to dig up information on any other members, but this doesn't include Jim Fuller.
