I. Jeziak and The Surfers - S/T

I. Jeziak and The Surfers - S/T

Sometimes being part of a local scene can raise your profile a bit, make sure the right people hear your stuff. I. Jeziak and the Surfers are, to my knowledge, the only Polish surf band at the moment, and yet they've managed to break out all the same, getting signed to the prestigious Hi-Tide label, and taking stage at Surfer Joe Summer Festival, and after this record, who knows? I suppose in surf music you can make a name for yourself by scraping for that one spot of originality nobody's found yet, or you can grab that ring that so many have reached for and slipped their fingers: vintage authenticity. Somehow this group from a place that probably doesn't have easy access to Fender gear and more than likely grew up hearing Shadows more than Surfaris have made about as convincing of a 60's reproduction as I've heard.

The Untamed Youth - Git Up and Go

The Untamed Youth - Git Up and Go

This blog has a pretty strict instrumental focus, so I'm bending the rules a bit to review the new Untamed Youth, as it only has four instrumentals. But they're such a legendary group that is essential to the story of surf revival, and it would be a shame to leave it off.

OK that's not really why. I want to focus on these instrumentals, as they're pretty excellent.

Alright, that's not really it either. I mostly just want to write about one song.

The Surfrajettes - Easy as Pie

The Surfrajettes - Easy as Pie

It's been a thrill watching the trajectory of The Surfrajettes. Surprise youtube viral hit, then touring surf conventions, a few 7"s on Hi-Tide, and then a really fun debut LP. That was when I last wrote about them, and I felt that all the statements they needed to make were made, nothing left to prove. But I'm used to writing about bands that live in the surf realm. The Surfrajettes are one of the few legit instrumental surf groups that have managed to move beyond that, going on tours supporting Electric Six and Reverend Horton Heat. They've gotten press outside of surf zines! But that also means stuff matters more, and so they've weathered lineup changes, the stress of actual touring, and these things contribute to something smaller bands don't care about: the threat of the sophomore slump.

The Scimitars - Desert Tales

The Scimitars - Desert Tales

From the moment they started playing shows there's been buzz in the surf world about The Scimitars, who blend surf and middle eastern music, often with the visual accompaniment of a belly dancer. There's enough reason to be excited just about the surf side of things, as Ran Mosessco's music with the Astroglides and The Sand Devils are great, and Jonpaul Balak on bass is always a big plus. They've been patient letting this sound and these songs develop, with only a single 7" released last year since they started up in 2018, and finally they're ready to debut a full length.

The Babalooneys - Late to the Party

The Babalooneys - Late to the Party

For a band with a decidedly unserious name, The Babalooneys' craft is no joke. While there's been recent hype building up with two great Hi-Tide 7"s and a strong (I hear) Surfer Joe 2023 appearance, I had admittedly forgotten about an EP from them way back in 2012. That's a long time to wait before putting out an LP! Well, I'd say it was enough --  what we have on our hands is a true gem of the genre.

Messer Chups - Dark Side of Paradise

Messer Chups - Dark Side of Paradise

Not to be a brat, but when I got an email about another Messer Chups record, my reaction was "oh ok, sure"

There's just a lot of Messer Chups. I think my digital collection spans 17 releases. And I can't really blame them, I once watched a guy walk up to their merch table and buy one of each album, which is when I realized that having a big back catalog helps you make more money! But aside from one record with , can I really expect a new Messer Chups record to be more than just more?

Actually, yes!

The Ventures - New Space and The Ventures in general I guess

The Ventures - New Space

Music reviews typically are here to answer one question: Is it any good? I operate by a "if you don't have anything nice to say..." rule so my answer is always either "yes" or I avoid answering. However, a new Ventures record is under heavier scrutiny, and will likely face nastier questions like, "Are these actually The Ventures?" and "Should I even care?" After all, this is their first LP in 24 years, and the lineup contains zero original members.

Satan's Pilgrims - Go Action!!

Satan's Pilgrims - Go Action!!

I've really been struck by how many fantastic surf releases this year, and every time I reflect on this I've reminded myself that there are a few looming releases threatening to crash my mental list of favorites. Any Satan's Pilgrims release holds that promise, but this is a particularly meaningful one as it's the last one that will feature their classic lineup with their late guitarist Dave Busacker who passed away in March 2021.
