I pointed out the strangeness of Johnny Carbonaras' album cover in my Gremmy Awards and they've stayed pretty weird here - and they're consistent in their fascination with piles of stringy stuff. Today they're not so much knitting with it, but eating it.

Meanwhile, Viernes de Hongos have gone for a bit of an Ed Wood vibe in their video - and maybe even a smidge of Beastie Boys. Pretty silly stuff

Phantom Operators - Metal Mariachi Music

Thankfully not much similarity to the similarly named Lou Reed record, Knoxville's Phantom Operators have been drip-feeding single songs for a few months now and have scooped them all up into a 9-song LP. Some songs like Tiki Patrol and Charlie's Point are pretty trad, but it finds a darker place as it moves on. Definitely get a bit of an Insect Surfers/Derangers vibe.

EDIT! I'm rescheduling this. Stay tuned.

Storm Surge of Reverb makes its way to your earholes thanks to WTUL 91.5 fm in New Orleans Louisiana. 2 Years ago we put on a killer fundraiser show for WTUL featuring Kill, Baby... Kill! and the Unnaturals and it was a complete success, packing the bar to the gills and making a decent chunk of change for the station. You see, here in New Orleans there's not an awful lot of surf groups and definitely not much of a surf scene. But I have a lot of listeners! If I want to do a Storm Surge of Reverb special, they'll come out!

Swami John Reis & the Blind Shake - Modern Surf Classics

For a lot of us I know this album answers a prayer we never considered having. John Reis of Hot Snakes, Rocket From the Crypt and all sorts of other groups have teamed up with The Blind Shake (lesser known but a great band, especially if you're a Hot Snakes fan) to make a surf album. While it won't be out until February, you can stream it on the AV Club's website. Believe it or not, it's as good as it sounds like it should be. Heavy, fast, well-produced, surprisingly inventive.
