Last time we heard from the The Okay-Men I did some sleuthwork into figuring out just who these mystery men were. Looks like this isn't a one-off side project though, we've got a full LP and in the quick sample listen I did this morning I'd say it's the best Okay/Boo-Men material yet. It's faster, harder, but it's still got plenty of that pogo pseudo-polka beat.Read more

Surf is about riding surf boards, but some people like to ride horses. For this we have Horse Rock.
I could continue with horse-related jokes. Something about "galloping rhythms". Then I'd have to think really hard for more parallels. I'd suggest you check out their website instead, it's much funnier than whatever I would say.Read more
The Raulis are my kind of band - half loud, rough, slightly psychedelic surf instro, half cool chicha. The two converge in their especially unique take on Pipeline. This is a really fun EP and I can't wait to hear more from them. Love the wild album art too!Read more
You (may) have heard of "Crime Jazz" but have you heard any "Crime Rock"?
Skurkarna play rough and tumble instro tunes with clips from noir and crime movies interspersed throughout. Very seedy. For English speakers scratching their heads at the name, I've gathered from the internet that Skurkarna is the plural of Skurk, which is Swedish slang for a villain or scoundrel.
Currently this one is available from a...Read more
Years after their well liked EP "The Good, The Bad, and the Reverb", Austin's King Pelican are back with their first LP "Matador Surfer" on Deep Eddy records.
At the moment I don't know of anywhere to stream previews, but this Youtube of a live show should help

The Phantom Operators just released two songs in support of V2 Tuesday (V2uesday?), which is raising money for Bob Spalding and Leon Taylor, current members of the Ventures, to release a new record through Indiegogo. All purchases of this single or their other works will go to V2 today.Read more
Moussaka plays surf covers of balkan folk pop songs from the 80's. At least that's what they say, and since I can't think of a single example of that genre, I'm going to have to play them. One of the guitarists also plays bass for Threesome, which is reason enough to give it a moment of eartime.
They've got it at a Pay-what-you-want level on bandcamp

Travelers of Tyme released an excellent and very diverse self-titled LP a over 3 years ago. Though they've updated their bandcamp page with older items (at least I think so, hard to say for a Tyme travelling band), I was really hoping for something new. We finally have something and it includes an instro cover of the Game of Thrones theme.Read more
This one's named Egotones The Tape because cassette is the primary medium for this one. At times it seems pretty standard surfy, but then it'll lapse into unexpected psychedelic territory. Or Spaghetti Western. It surprises! Here, you listen!Read more
I picked up Hell-O-Tiki's Curse of Hell-O-Tiki back in 2012 have been patiently awaiting hearing something new since. From the previews on their CDBaby page this LP sounds like it's just as great as everything they've had so far. Here's one of the tracks off of it.
The Terrorsaurs have a rare reptilian take on surf - though tracks such as Avalanche, Himalayan Surf, Moose Call and Apache Bear may suggest otherwise. Perhaps it's true that dinosaurs are warm blooded, which would excuse the cold-themed songs. Perhaps Terrorsaurs eat mooses and bears. I don't know.
Back to business. I believe the special guests are imaginary (I tried looking them up) and the whole thing is pretty fun and goofy, though with a creepy, dark vibe throughout as well....Read more
The saxophone seems to divide surf fans, but Grand Kahuna know exactly where they lie in the argument: they've got two of them. I really liked their last record, especially their longer takes on songs like Surf Beat. These are all covers again, they're shorter and there's less of them but they make them fresh! Glad to see more from them!
Edit: As pointed out in the comments, they've expanded this one to 8 tracks! Yes!Read more
According to their bandcamp page, Team Void are dead luchadores cursed to rock the living. It's definitely got a heavy, lurching, mid-tempo sound to it that fits their dead personae, with bits of dead mariachi-esque horns sprinkled amidst it. Give it a listen!Read more

More great stuff from Austin, Texas here. While the Spoils 2013 debut wasn't exactly tame, they've definitely gotten a lot fiercer with this one.Read more

For a while this one was only available in person or in Spanish record stores, but it looks like there's now a few more options. They don't drop their excellent surf twang, but they head out for that lonely, desolate western tone and pace. More quality stuff from a quality group.

Surf is usually a very analog type of music, but Mexico's Los Jinetes Del Terror chose to ignore that. The entire record has an electric buzz (and fuzz) to it. They're not afraid to put their keyboards, drum machine or any digital effects front and center. But make no mistake, the guitars are loud, fuzzy and frantic as hell, and the end result is nicely balanced I think. It might need a bit for surf fans to adjust to, but sometimes those are the best records in the end.
