My wife and I are both not the sort of people that pay attention to lyrics. Hilariously, I sequestered myself in a genre of music that foregoes them altogether, she chose a different, equally obscure music where the lyrics sound like gibberish to her. So yeah, this isn't surf by any stretch of imagination; Blato Zlato does traditional Balkan music (mostly Bulgarian) with a slight experimental twist. This is their first LP and my wife has been going crazy making it happen. She's one of the vocalists, though she arranged a number of the songs.

Brazil's Paquetá have been around for a less than a year but have already played over 50 shows and released several demos and live tracks. This is the first studio release, a better look at their sound. All five tracks are gritty, howling instrumental surf punk with psychedelic tinges. They hardly ever slow it down, full-on energy and power from start to finish.
Give it a listen!
That's right, every song in today's show was released in 2016. And that's with a lot of good stuff not making the cut. Really excited about this one!

Surf is no longer the same music that the kids in California were making. It's drawn in influences from all over the place to make its own more open sound. Some of these bands seek to establish new boundaries in what instrumental rock & roll can be, some just make the sound that makes sense to them. Here are the ones that stood out most to me, in no particular order.
